Lawmakers have little time to agree on a new package before a key provision of the current CARES Act runs out. Here’s what’s at stake. 

Unemployment Insurance – Federal unemployment benefits run out at the end of July. While some seek to extend the benefit, others oppose an extension. 

Back-To-Work Bonuses – Some lawmakers want a bonus for returning to work rather than extending unemployment benefits. 

Payroll Tax Cut – President Trump favors a payroll tax cut, although that doesn’t do anything to help those who are unemployed. 

Stimulus Checks – While some are strongly in favor of another stimulus check, others are opposed to it. 

Aid To State and Local Governments – There is concern over state and local government’s ability to handle rising healthcare costs and essential services like schools without additional federal funding. 

Small Business Relief – The Paycheck Protection Program has been extended until August 8 and currently has $134 billion still available. 

Liability Protections – This is centered around protecting businesses that reopen against coronavirus-related lawsuits. 

Tourism Tax Breaks – Tax cuts on domestic travel have also been discussed to increase traffic in such a hard-hit industry.
