Senate Democrats want to extend unemployment benefits until the unemployment rate reaches a certain level at which point it would phase out.
With unemployment rates still hovering around 13%, the plan is set to expire at the end of the month leaving many at risk of a severe drop in income.
Senate Republicans have opposed extending the policy and want to let it expire at the end of July.
Also in talks is a “back-to-work” bonus and possibly a second stimulus package. More will be discussed when they return from their break in the last two weeks of July.
